ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥® Governing Council

The Governing Council is ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥’s ultimate decision-making body. Governing Councillors have a strong understanding of local, national, and international issues that need to be brought to the forefront of the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ agenda. They are knowledgeable about the real estate management industry. And they are knowledgeable about how ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ works – strategically, operationally, and legislatively.

Applications are now open through July 15, 2025 for the 2026-2028 Governing Council.

Things to know about the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Governing Council

 Over 230+ members serve on the Governing Council:

  • Elected Governing Councillors – must be a CPM®, ARM®, ACoM®, or CPM candidate
    • Seventy-five (75) elected Governing Councillors
    • Serve three-year terms
  • Ex-officio members of Governing Council – serve on Governing Council for the term of their position
    • President (Chair of Governing Council)
    • President-Elect
    • Secretary/Treasurer
    • Regional Vice Presidents
    • ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Country Vice Presidents
    • Remaining members of the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Board of Directors
    • ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Past Presidents
    • All sitting Chapter Presidents
  • Seats per region – each of the 13 U.S. regions are allocated a specific number of the 75 elected Governing Council seats based on the total number of CPMs at year-end.
  • International members – all ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ members, including international members, are welcome to apply; however, please note all meetings will be scheduled in North American time zones, materials will be provided in English only, and attendance at the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Leadership Forum (either virtually or in-person) for the duration of the three-year term is required.  All expenses for in-person attendance are the responsibility of the volunteer.
  • Re-election – per ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Bylaws, no elected Governing Councillor after having served two full consecutive terms shall be eligible for re-election until one year’s time has elapsed.
  • Governing Councillors are expected to:
    • Attend (virtually or in-person) the annual Governing Council meeting for the duration of your term and actively participate.
    • Be knowledgeable about ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥’s strategic plan, Bylaws, policies, and key programs.
    • Review Governing Council reports, financial reports, agendas, and other materials distributed throughout the year.
    • Represent the voice of your chapter and region.

Governing Council FAQs

  • How and when are Governing Councillors selected?
    • All interested members must submit an application by the deadline; late applications will not be considered.
    • Applications are reviewed by the Nominating Committee, which chooses the slate of nominees.
    • If nominated, you will be notified via email by early September and will need to accept the nomination via the link you receive â€� and by the deadline –to confirm your nomination.
    • The slate of nominees is published 30 days prior to the election, which takes place during the annual Governing Council meeting.
    • All ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ members in attendance at the annual Governing Council meeting elect the new Councillors from the slate of nominees â€� the term begins January 1 the following year.
  • What expenses are covered for Governing Councillors?

    For those attending the ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Leadership Forum, all expenses are the responsibility of the volunteer.

  • What are the terms for Governing Councillors?

    Councillors serve a 3-year, staggered term; terms begin January 1 and end December 31.

  • What would be my commitment as a Governing Councillor?
    • Attending the annual Governing Council meeting (virtually or in-person) for the duration of your term.
    • Reviewing agendas and being prepared to actively participate in discussions and decision-making.
    • Having an understanding of ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥â€™s strategic plan,  policies, governing documents, and key programs.
    • Reviewing quarterly Governing Council reports and other materials distributed throughout the year.
    • Representing the voice of your chapters and region.
  • How will I make a difference by serving on Governing Council?

    Make decisions that affect ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥â€™s future:

    • Adopting the strategic plan
    • Approving the annual operating plan and budget
    • Approving ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Legislative Statement of Policies
    • Approving membership requirements, chapter formation or dissolution, and governance policies
    • Approving ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ Bylaw amendments and Statement of Policy revisions

    Making decisions that affect the real estate management profession:

    • Use your leadership skills to represent the voice of ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ membership by bringing emerging industry trends, issues, and challenges to the forefront of ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥â€™s focus and planning.
    • As an ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ member, you are in a unique position to be a decision-maker on the highest level, helping ÀÖ¾ºÌåÓýÈüÊÂÖ±²¥ increase recognition and build the presence of the real estate management profession.
